New puppies, new projects, and a ton of new dreams!
Last month we told you about the surgery room... we are almost there! We have started moving our pharmacy there, and our medical equipment... it's quite fun to find everything a place while imagining the use and flow this room is going to have... stay tuned... we are hoping to baptize it in August!
We also mentioned the shelter room... and we were just so annoyed with the floor we went looking for options and decided to paint it! What do you think?!
Every day we are on top of new projects and we see Isla Animals Oasis becoming more and more the space we dreamt of... and we are already using it!
For now we are doing most of the work ourselves
(keep in mind there is 2 or 3 of us!)
Seeing our pups enjoying the place so much it's the best motivation to keep going, regardless of the sweat, tears and more sweat!
What's next at Isla Animals OASIS?!
We are so happy with how much progress we have made in July! Last month we talked about what was next... so let's see...
- Painting - We did a ton of it! The house/office side of the shelter is almost 100% and the shelter side has been sealed and just needs a layer of paint! The roof of the shelter has been finally finished to face the seasonal rains and we just finished painting the floor of the shelter and working on some stairs at the moment!
- Dealing with the heat and humidity - Well.. hurricane Beryl brought wind and rain and the temperatures went down a bit... Now we are back to the humid summer, so we just keep fans on and pups get water three or four times a day!
- Electrical issues - this is what we worked the hardest during July! And we are happy to announce that we found a solution! We are super happy to have found a person that was up for the challenge our unique situation posed and he has done a great job!
First, we fixed the line to the street (the thousands of feet of cable running through the jungle), we had to make a ton of changes but this solved the issue of the voltage and we can happily report no more flickering lights!
We have also finally installed solar panels! It's a small system but it will give us the extra power we need here... and it's something we wanted to do from start as we are trying to be as sustainable as possible! and... this has allowed us to install and AC in the surgery room which was a MUST!!!!!
Who's living in Isla Animals Oasis at the moment?!
We have about 25 dogs, 4 cats... a chicken and a duck (and 2 turtles!)
Our little cows have left, with Vaquito waiting for his family on July 24! Their momma, Chestnut, is still up for adoption (she's small... about 12kg, but she is too big to fly in cabin...)
Best news this month is that Lucy got adopted!!!! Our senior fluffy girl had her freedom flight to Canada early in July and she is thriving with her new family!!!!
Mistica has been improving so much, her fur is almost back to normal... we have a few applications for her but transport is always a challenge... in the meanwhile we are working on her anxiety, which is not terrible, but breaks our hearts to imagine what she has gone through...
Foxy is our latest addition... she comes from Isla Mujeres... she was abandoned a long time ago and had some beautiful souls caring fro her until we could bring her over... she's precious and so smart... and she knows how to smile!!!!
And we got 11 new puppies!!!!
Our princesses are thriving and 3 have left already for a better life, we got a lone pup that was found in the streets with a ton of fungus (and we are working to fix her..) she is the sweetest puppy ever and we cannot wait to see her healthy and making new friends!
And finally, we got a litter of four absolutely gorgeous chihuahuas... we are in love!
